Kangaroo Point Medevac refugees being moved to BITA by force

This afternoon, police and Serco officers are forcibly moving the remaining Medevac refugees from Kangaroo Point hotel to the Brisbane Immigration Detention Centre.

Despite refugee supporters gathering quickly at the gates of the hotel to protest against the move, two minibuses of refugees have left the hotel.

The forced moves comes just a couple of hours before a planned protest at the hotel to mark one year since the first exercise protests at the hotel defied covid regulations and called for the release of all those imprisoned there.

“We don’t want any more transfers between detention centres. Everyone should be released,” said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.

The forced moves come one day after Somali refugee, Saif, was released from BITA into community detention to join his wife and son living in the community.

“We are thrilled for Saif, and his family,” said Dane De Leon from Refugee Solidarity Meanjin, “But it is time the hell of detention was ended for everyone, and all our friends are released.”
