Tamil refugee seriously injured after vicious hit and run on Nauru

A 36-year-old Tamil refugee is expected to be transferred by air ambulance from Nauru to Australia later today (Thursday 11 February) after being deliberately run down at around 11.00pm, Tuesday night (9 February), by a carload of local Nauruans.

The refugee was riding his motorcycle when the car struck him from behind, knocking him off the bike, and running directly over his body.

The occupants of the car fled the scene after stealing the motorcycle.

The refugee is in a serious condition with severe injuries, including arm, leg and facial fractures, and back injuries requiring further investigation and possible surgery.

The driver and other occupants of the car have been arrested and remain in custody, although it is not known what charges have been laid against them.

“This is attempted murder,” said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition, “It is one of the ugliest incidents on Nauru for some time, and a shocking reminder of the threat of violence that refugees and asylum seekers live with on Nauru. Nauru is not safe for them.

“The government transferred 18 people from Nauru to Australia this year on 18 January. But they, and others, transferred a year ago, are still being held in detention while around 127 people are still held on Nauru.

“All refugees and asylum seekers should be immediately brought to Australia, given their freedom and permanent visas; the abuse has gone on too long.”
