Christmas Island rooftop protest starts again

Around 7.15pm Monday night, the Christmas Island rooftop protest re-started, when one Iranian asylum seeker went back onto the roof of the Green Two compound.

Ghazi (not his real name), is one of the two Iranian asylum seekers who ended a four-day rooftop protest on 29 May. Both Ghazi and Ali were taken to the punishment compound White One, when they came off the roof in May.

Yesterday, Ghazi was charged and taken to court. (Exact charges are not known, but apparently relate to an alleged incident prior to the May protest.) After court, he was returned to Green One. Ali, his co-protester, remains in White One.

Ghazi restarted the protest on Monday evening. He told the Refugee Action Coalition, “Serco and Immigration tell too many lies.”

“The protest has again lifted the lid on the unaccountable punishment regime of the Immigration Department. Away from prying eyes, Serco and the department are a law into themselves. The sooner Christmas Island is closed, the better,” said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.
