Nauruan refugee starts crane protest

IMG-20151127-WA0000An Iranian refugee, Reza Khestinzhad, (44 years old) has scaled the tallest crane on Nauru – on the construction site for refugee accommodation – with a placard calling for the release of children from Nauru.

The placard reads: “World: Kids in Nauru Need Help”.

The latest Border Force figures show 95 children ‘in detention’ on Nauru – but there are more who are just as much ‘prisoners’ living in the community on Nauru.

Reza has been on Nauru, with his sister, for 21 months.

Reza’s protest comes as the “open detention” policy has highlighted that Nauru is a detention island, and that neither the Australian government nor Nauru has any resettlement arrangements in place to secure the future of the refugees on Nauru.
